"I do it because I want to help." Over ten years ago, Shelia Caison became a therapeutic foster parent with Coastal NC Omni Visions. Born and raised in the beach community of Holden Beach, NC, where the blue waters meet the Carolina sky, Shelia embarked on a new journey. She decided that she would open her home even more to kids.
For a number of years in the early 90s,' Shelia's home had been an emergency safe haven for children in crisis. Her reputation as a person of compassion and responsibility is well known, but she is better known for her wit and love of decorating for the holidays. Call her cell phone any holiday and you will get a most original voice mail message. It will bring a smile to your face and a certainty in knowing that this warm loving person is who is taking care of our kids.
Shelia's work continues in her community outside the boundary of Omni Visions. Her job as a Teaching Assistant in an autistic elementary classroom brought her recognition as the State of NC runner up for Teaching Assistant of the Year. This year she was recognized for her contribution as a Mentor to children by her home community of Brunswick County. If you would like to visit with this Omni treasure someday, come prepared to sip some cool refreshing tea and listen intently to what she teaches. There are stories of caring, gentle firmness, and respect for all.
She delights in her updates from former Omni kids who have aged out and moved on to adult life. This is what it is about; knowing you make a difference. Thanks Shelia, for all you do!
